Raddad al-Akari (R) and Khaled Taqtaq
Two members of armed groups have confessed to carrying weapons and shooting at the Syrian troops in the western city of Homs.

Raddad al-Akari and Khaled Taqtaq, previously arrested in Homs, also said in their confessions broadcasted by state media on Sunday that they had set up barricades in several neighborhoods of the city to “terrify citizens.”

Akari said that in April 2011 he participated in “anti-government” demonstrations in Homs.

The duo also said the weapons in their possession were smuggled into the country “from Lebanon.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Bashar al-Assad.

Hundreds of people including Syrian security forces have been killed in the turmoil.

Damascus says “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are responsible for the unrest and it is being orchestrated from abroad.
